Glühwürmchen? Schon mal gesehen? Wenn du in Neuseeland bist, kannst du das in den Waitomo Caves erleben.
Erreichbarkeit: In Neuseeland bist du mit einem Mietauto am besten und schnellsten unterwegs. In etwa 2 1/2 bis 3 h erreichst du die Waitomo Caves. Die neuseeländischen Autobahnen sind oft kurvig und gehen hoch und runter. Rechne also genügend Zeit ein.
Parkplätze sind bei den Waitomo Caves kostenlos vorhanden.
Touren: Für ca. 60 Dollar kannst du eine einstündige Tour durch die Glühwürmchen Höhlen machen. Da die Touren beliebt sind, buche etwas im Voraus.
Wir haben eine Tour gemacht, die in Teil zu Fuss, ein Teil mit dem Boot absolviert wurde. Dazu erfährst du mehr über die Geschichte der Glühwürmchenhöhlen.
Im Boot angekommen, kommst du kaum aus dem Staunen heraus. Die Bilder sind nicht übertrieben. Die Glühwürmchen erhellen die Höhlen wunderschön.

Laufen rund um die Waitomo Caves: Eine kurze Wanderung von den Waitomo Caves führt auf einen Aussichtspunkt. Die Wanderung dauert 30 Minuten bis 1h. Ein toller Ausblick über die typisch hügelige Landschaft Neuseelands.
Forgotten World Highway
Die Reise ging bei uns weiter über den Forgotten World Highway. Der Name beschreibt diesen Highway auf den Punkt genau. Für mehr als 2 Stunden kein Internet. Die Strassen führen kurvig hoch und runter. Die Strassen verlassen. Teils sind auch Schotterstrassen vorhanden. Aber: So einen schönen Highway habe ich noch nie gesehen.
Waitomo Caves
Firefly? Already seen? If you're in New Zealand, you can experience that at the Waitomo Caves.
Accessibility: In New Zealand you are best and fastest with a rental car. In about 2 1/2 to 3 hours you will reach the Waitomo Caves. New Zealand's motorways are often winding and go up and down. So allow enough time.
Parking is free at the Waitomo Caves.
Tours: You can take a 1-hour tour of the Glowworm Caves for around $60. As the tours are popular, book a little in advance.
We did a tour that was partly on foot and partly by boat. You will also learn more about the history of the glowworm caves. Arrived in the boat, you can hardly stop being amazed. The pictures are not exaggerated. The glowworms light up the caves beautifully.
I got the picture from the Waitomo Caves website. Pictures may not be taken in the glowworm cave. It would disturb the animals.
Walk around the Waitomo Caves: A short hike from the Waitomo Caves leads to a viewpoint. The hike takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. A great view over the typical hilly landscape of New Zealand.

The journey continued with us via the Forgotten World Highway. The name describes this highway exactly. No internet for more than 2 hours. The roads wind up and down. Leave the streets. There are also some gravel roads. But: I've never seen such a beautiful highway.
